About the Canal

Dubai Water Canal — What Is It?

An urban waterway connecting Business Bay to the Arabian Gulf through the heart of Dubai.

The Canal Itself

The Dubai Water Canal is a man-made urban waterway developed by the RTA and completed in 2016. This 3.2 km navigable channel connects Business Bay and Downtown Dubai through Al Safa to the Arabian Gulf at Jumeirah.

Unlike the original Dubai Creek, this is a modern extension designed as an urban waterway. It creates a unique route through the city center — a completely different perspective from traditional yacht cruises in Dubai Marina or the open Gulf.

Landmarks

Canal Landmarks from the Water

Experience Dubai's urban architecture and iconic structures from the unique vantage point of the canal.

Bridge of Tolerance — Arch-Covered Pedestrian Bridge

The Bridge of Tolerance is an official landmark opened in 2016 as part of the canal development. This curved arch structure spans the canal, serving as both a pedestrian bridge and a visual landmark. The best view is from below, looking straight up as your yacht passes through the architectural arch.

Dubai Frame — Iconic Gold Picture Frame

Located in Zabeel Park and visible from the canal, the Dubai Frame stands 150 meters tall — one of the world's largest picture frames. The structure features two towers connected by a 93-meter sky bridge. Your best angle is from the Business Bay end of the canal, where the Frame appears framed between the canal banks.

Burj Khalifa — Background Presence

While not directly on the canal, the 828-meter Burj Khalifa dominates the skyline from the Business Bay stretch. The tower creates a perfect photo opportunity when framed between the canal banks. This is a completely different perspective than typical Gulf-side views.

Business Bay Skyline

Both sides of the canal are flanked by Business Bay's glass-and-steel corporate towers — a very different aesthetic from the Marina resort feel. In the evening, these buildings are illuminated, creating stunning reflections in the calm canal waters.

Al Safa Stretch — Green and Tranquil

The middle section of the canal passes through Al Safa and Al Wasl residential areas. Here you'll find lower tower density, green banks, and a quieter, more residential character. Walking paths run alongside the canal, visible from your vessel.

Jumeirah Opening — Canal Meets the Gulf

The canal terminus at the Arabian Gulf near Jumeirah Road bridge. This is the transition point where the urban waterway opens to the sea. Tours can extend into the Gulf from this point for an additional duration if desired.

Vessel Requirements

Canal Vessel Restrictions — Size Matters Here

The canal's 8 fixed bridges create height restrictions that limit which vessels can complete the full transit.

Cannot Transit

Flybridge yachts — elevated helm station exceeds bridge clearance

Masted sailboats — mast height incompatible with bridges

Large vessels over 5.5m — exceed maximum height above waterline

✓ Can Transit

Open-deck motor yachts under 5.5m

Speedboats and sport cruisers

Our canal-compatible fleet:
• Silver Wind 27 ft
• Sunset Victor 30 ft
• Moonlight Star 33 ft
• Horizon Sanctuary 32 ft

Bridge Specifications

Total bridges: 8 fixed structures

Lowest clearance: 5.5-6 meters above water

Canal depth: ~6 meters (sufficient for all vessels)

Result: Height, not draft, is the limiting factor

Why Smaller is Better

More agile navigation — easier to maneuver in the narrow canal

Better sightlines — lower deck provides superior bridge views

Authentic experience — feel closer to the urban waterway architecture

Need a larger vessel? Consider our Dubai Marina yacht options which don't have these height restrictions.

Timing

Best Time for a Canal Cruise

Evening and night cruises offer the most dramatic canal atmosphere with illuminated towers and bridges.

Evening / Night (Preferred)

Canal at night features Business Bay towers illuminated with stunning water reflections. The Bridge of Tolerance is lit after dark, and the Dubai Frame looks spectacular from dusk. The evening atmosphere is much more dramatic than daytime. Recommended departure: 6:30-7 PM (October-April).

Daytime (Architecture Focus)

Best for structure detail, photography, and seeing the urban landscape clearly. Dubai Frame and Burj Khalifa are visible against a blue-sky backdrop. Ideal for architectural photography and understanding the canal's engineering and design.

Common Questions

Everything You Need to Know

Answers to the most frequent questions about our canal tours.

Dubai Marina is a recreational marina resort with residential towers and a marina promenade. The Dubai Water Canal is an urban waterway through the city — Business Bay, Downtown, Al Safa — with a completely different atmosphere and different landmarks. Visit our Dubai Marina yacht page to compare options.

No — bridge clearance restricts the canal to smaller open-deck vessels. Our 27-32 ft boats can fully transit. This is actually better for the canal experience — smaller boats are more agile and give better sightlines. Larger yachts can approach from the Gulf but cannot complete the full transit.

Depends on your preference. Business Bay marina for a canal-first departure. Dubai Marina Gate 4 if you want to transit from the Gulf end. We'll send you the exact pier location and Google Maps pin once your booking is confirmed.

Night is more atmospheric — tower lighting, bridge illuminations, water reflections. Day is better for architecture and photography of the Dubai Frame. We recommend evening departures (6:30-7 PM) for the best of both: daylight during transit and illuminated towers on return.

No — swimming inside the Dubai Water Canal is not permitted. Swim stops are available in the open Arabian Gulf (if extending the tour to the Gulf section). For tours with swimming focus, consider our Gulf-based routes.

Excellent. The urban canal setting is a unique Dubai photography backdrop — very different from the usual beach/palm photos. Best gear: wide-angle for bridge shots, telephoto for Dubai Frame. Evening golden hour provides the best lighting. Consider booking our dinner cruise for extended photography time.
